Lejeune, Carroll, Gayle and Yedlin – Latest Newcastle United injury news and expected return dates

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has close to a full squad available to him as he plans his side’s trip to Norwich City this weekend.

The new Magpies chief brought five new players to his first-team squad over the summer and is looking for his first win in charge when they face the newly-promoted Canaries.

Several players remain on the treatment table however, and will be unavailable this weekend.

Here we rundown those who are currently recovering from injuries and how long they are expected to be out for.

Florian Lejeune

The French defender suffered his second serious knee injury in less than a year when he went down following a challenge against Crystal Palace last April.

The centre-back’s recovery is believed to be on track, but no date has been set for a return.

DeAndre Yedlin

The USA defender underwent an operation on a groin problem in May, meaning he missed the Magpies’ pre-season schedule.

He returned to training last week but was not in the squad to face Arsenal, and Bruce has confirmed he will miss the next few weeks as he continues to recover.

“We thought he’d be OK, but unfortunately he’s not so I can’t see him for at least another three or four weeks at least,” said Bruce. That’s a worry for us.”

Andy Carroll

It’s more of a case of building fitness for Carroll after his release from West Ham at the end of last season

United’s deadline-day signing spent some of the summer training with the Hammers, and Bruce believes the big striker is two-three weeks away from a return to action.

Dwight Gayle

United fans have not seen anything of the striker since his return from a spell on loan at West Bromwich Albion, thanks to a calf injury.

The frontman missed all of United’s pre-season dates and is still being assessed before a date is given for his return.

Jonjo Shelvey

The Magpies playmaker came off against Arsenal on the opening day with a knee injury, but Bruce felt it was “not too serious” in the immediate aftermatch

The former Liverpool man has been training this week and is expected to be fit for Norwich this weekend.
